▶︎ About SUNRISE

SUNRISE, the animation studio that produces the Gundam series, is now a subsidiary of Bandai Namco Filmworks, Inc.

SUNRISE Into the Future

For more than 40 years, Sunrise has been a “company that creates things from zero” and has produced many original video productions, including Mobile Suit Gundam and Love Live!

All of these works are the result of the collective passion of “people,” including employees and creators. No matter how advanced technology becomes, this will never change. The desire to create something that resonates with people’s hearts is where it all begins and leads to all our results.

In April 2022, Sunrise merged with the film business of Bandai Namco Arts Inc., which engages in video production and video sales and which is part of the same Bandai Namco Group, and Bandai Namco Rights Marketing Inc., which engages in video distribution and other activities, to start anew as Bandai Namco Filmworks Inc.

Although the structure of the company has changed, we will continue to produce “good things” that deliver excitement to people around the world by bringing together the passions of each and every one of us, centering around the unique “SUNRISE” brand that we have been refining for many years.

Gundam to be featured at Formula 1 in Las Vegas

Bandai Namco Entertainment is set to host a cross-over project within the Bandai Namco Group known as the “Gundam Project” at the Formula 1 Heineken Silver Las Vegas Grand Prix 2023 (F1 Las Vegas GP), taking place from November 17-19. They’ve entered into a partnership agreement with Scuderia AlphaTauri through Bandai Namco Entertainment America.

This collaboration will bring the Mobile Suit Gundam series to the F1 Las Vegas GP, displaying the RX-78-2 Gundam prominently on both sides of the headrest of Scuderia AlphaTauri’s AT04 car. They will also introduce a decal for XVX-016 Gundam Aerial.

This partnership extends beyond the typical bounds of F1 sponsorship, encompassing the installation of two 2-meter-tall Gundam statues at the circuit, the application of decals to the AT04, the establishment of a pop-up store near the circuit, and the incorporation of Scuderia Alpha. A range of activities centered around the Mobile Suit Gundam series, including a gunpla display of the RX-78-2 Gundam, featuring Tauri decals and coloring, will be open to the public.

Lastly, a promotional video has been released, featuring the race car driver Yuki Tsunoda dressed in a racing suit inspired by a Gundam pilot.

GUNDAM NEXT FUTURE PAVILION – New key visual revealed

Today, the Bandai Namco Group presented an update on the progress of the “Yokohama full-scale ‘moving Gundam’ launch experiment” and the concept for the “Gundam Pavilion” at the Osaka / Kansai Expo. The pavilion, set to be featured at the 2025 Japan World Expo (Osaka / Kansai Expo), has been officially named the “GUNDAM NEXT FUTURE PAVILION,” and they also unveiled the new key visual and the pavilion’s exterior design.

The name change for the Osaka / Kansai Expo pavilion reflects a forward-looking vision where Gundam and humanity work together to address future societal challenges, set in the context of “Another Universal Century.” The pavilion’s exterior design draws inspiration from a futuristic space port, symbolizing the idea of humans expanding their living space into space itself.

As Gundam approaches its 45th anniversary next year, the project is exploring new possibilities for the franchise, which has been known for its diverse storytelling over the years. The outcomes of this exploration will be showcased at the “GUNDAM NEXT FUTURE PAVILION” during the Osaka / Kansai Expo and are scheduled to be announced there.

One of the core objectives at the Osaka / Kansai Expo is to align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and envision a brighter future beyond, aiming for a “future society where life shines.” In the context of the Gundam project’s “NEXT FUTURE,” it signifies imaging not just the future potential of Gundam itself but also a future coexisting with Gundam. The intention is to engage with fans and collectively create the society of the next future.

During the “Private Pavilion Exhibitor Presentation” held in May of last year, the company had previously announced plans to conduct extensive demonstration experiments geared toward addressing the challenges of the future society, set within a different Universal Century. These exhibitions will revolve around four themes:

  1. Proof-of-concept experiments towards the future
  2. Realization of co-creation through connections between people
  3. Future possibilities demonstrated by Gundam
  4. Future experiences that bridge the real and virtual

Regarding the underlying concept of Gundam, it was noted that “Since the release of the anime over 40 years ago, Gundam has amassed a global fanbase, and we aspire to spread its message far and wide.”

The “Gundam Metaverse” is slated to begin early access tomorrow, with general access opening mid-October

The “Gundam Metaverse,” a virtual space designed for Gundam enthusiasts, will begin its early access phase on October 6th, followed by general access opening around mid-October.

The Gundam Project, a collaborative effort within the Bandai Namco Group, revealed on October 5th that early access to the “Gundam Metaverse” will begin at 1:00 pm on Friday, October 6th. Initially, access will be limited to participants in Japan and the United States. Additionally, it was announced that general access without any participant restrictions is expected to begin around mid-October.

The Gundam Metaverse is a virtual hub uniting Gundam enthusiasts worldwide, offering a space for discussions and a range of engaging content. Bandai Namco envisions the Gundam Metaverse as a collaborative venture, aiming to shape a future where the company and fans work together to operate and expand the platform. They aim to cultivate the next-generation Gundam with active contributions from the fan community.

During the early access phase, visitors can partake in thought-provoking exhibits designed to stimulate conversations within the fan community. This includes a metaverse environment featuring a space colony theme, providing an immersive Gundam experience. Additionally, there’s a GUNPLA UGC (User Generated Content) museum. Users have the freedom to create their own avatars, navigate the Gundam Metaverse, capture snapshots, and engage with fellow users via chat and emotes.

The GUNPLA UGC Museum showcases impressive GUNPLA creations crafted by dedicated fan builders. During the early access period, visitors can explore GUNPLA CG Scans, which were pre-scanned using a high-quality GUNPLA scanning system. This innovative technology, jointly developed by Bandai Namco and the Sony Group, scans GUNPLA creations and transports them into the virtual realm. With the GUNPLA CG Scans, you can enjoy a demonstration of the Gundam in action, moving and embarking on sorties.

Moreover, following the start of general access, which is slated to begin around mid-October, a Metaverse Live event will take place in the live space. Additionally, exclusive event-specific GUNPLA (six variants) will be available for purchase at the GUNPLA Shop. The Metaverse Live will feature live performances by artists associated with Gundam works, such as yama, known for composing the opening theme for Season 2 of “Mobile Suit Gundam: Witch of Mercury.”

Early access to “Gundam Metaverse” is set to begin at 1:00pm on October 6th (JST). It will be available in two forms: a comprehensive 3D metaverse accessible from PCs that meet the recommended system requirements, and a browser-based metaverse accessible effortlessly from both PCs and smartphones. Early access participants will be selected via a lottery system from those who pre-registered on the official website. The lottery will be conducted gradually, depending on operational conditions.
